Architects preconceptions about user needs and the direct information they gather from the users are important aspects in design evaluations and interpretations. In design studio, students are expected to be aware of this significant issue in a general sense and investigate the potentials of user participation while considering the users in the decision making process of their designs by developing a scenario for themselves for their users which is based on their observations and interviews with users. With this aim, students are asked to design a weekend house for a particular user that will be defined individually by students. To initiate an awareness about the problems of small scale buildings in its cultural and natural context, the project locates in the countryside of a small settlement, which has traditional building features, in Peçenek village of Kizilcahamam, Ankara and includes a guest cabin and a workshop as parts of the weekend house which has to be interpreted by students. For coping with the structural and constructional problems of an individual building, students are asked to present the structural analysis of a traditional Peçenek house as part of the design process.
Responding to radical changes in the concept of privacy and introduction of new concepts of work and domestic life in parallel to transformation of the family life, today many people are using their homes as principal workplaces. The aim of this design problem is to introduce the students to the condition of working at home and living in the work place. The WorkShopHouse will be located in the Siteler district, Ankara. Siteler is established on a large urban plot, where there are ateliers, shops and warehouses manufacturing and selling house furnishings. Of Ankara, it is the main spot that gives service particularly on house furniture. It is mainly a commercial and industrial district, which is surrounded by residential districts. With the social-cultural changes and integration of work and domestic life, it is possible that professionals working in building component industries would prefer to combine their houses and work places in Siteler. Siteler is a planned urban block on the purpose of production and selling of building components. It is important to analyze and understand the characteristics of this district in order to introduce domestic life into the existing urban system. Students are expected to understand and interpret the generic system that forms the district.
Accordingly, the design problem is devised to focus on the following issues:
… to develop a design strategy, which dwells on the duality of domestic (private) activities and commercial (public) activities, and responds to the generic
urban system of the Siteler district.
… to develop a strategic combination of different programs, and in turn spaces, which achieves functional and spatial diversity within a unity.
…to incorporate external conditions (site forces) and internal organizational principles of a building (program); to develop an awareness for an effective
relationship between the building and the exterior.
… proper use of structural-and-constructional systems for the fulfillment of the program requirements.
Beyond its necessity for our nutrition, actually cooking is described as a social and cultural activity. Each culture has developed its own methods and
techniques for preparing their food, creating unique and rich recipes. Designing a cooking school provides students to think on their own odyssey
of taste both in cooking and in designing. As a simple reflection of this idea, students are expected to present their local cuisines with their recipes,
techniques and if possible with tastes, in parallel with their design processes.
Students are asked to design a cooking school including cooking and teaching area which provides professional and amateur cooking classes on
different levels and on different themes, a multi-purpose hall, a greenhouse, a restaurant, and small shops, which together provide a community
integrated learning and experiencing space for cooking. With this project, it is expected that students coped with the complex relationships between
various program elements of a medium size building with public and private spaces. In addition to the objectives of the building program it is aimed
to emphasize the importance of Universal Design approach and implementation of its principles to design decisions. The proposed area in Çayyolu,
a developing part of Ankara, locates next to a crowded commercial street surrounded by low rise residential lots and a small public park at the East
direction of the site. Students are expected to be aware of the problems of the urban context during the interpretation of the multifunctional building
complex.
The aim of this design problem is to develop awareness in the students for understanding the problems emerging from the complex relations between
the urban context, building and program. The design problem is devised to focus on the following issues:
… working with the site; to develop a critical approach to the design by registering the complexity of the given site.
… to develop a design strategy that will incorporate external conditions and internal organizational principles of a building complex in an urban context,
and generate the architectural form from the forces of the site and the requirements of the program.
… considering program as a design objective; program is not same with function; it is defined by actions and activities not by conventions; program is
the way of how to relate or compose functional requirements.
… an engagement with urban life.
… proper use of structural and constructional systems in different sizes of spaces.
Center for Studies on Modern Turkey (CSMT) provides students (principally graduate students) and scholars from universities all over the world a base for research and study in the language, literature, art, history, architecture, and politics of Turkey from the foundation of the Republic to the present.
The Center is committed to organize public lectures and conferences. It also publishes articles and reports on results of research and survey projects sponsored and directed by the center as well as other original research. With all of its scholarly programs and activities the CSMT not only seeks to advance knowledge of Modern Turkey but to foster relations between native and foreign scholars and the center.
CSMT is located on the 7th street (Aşkabat street) in Bahçelievler, Ankara. The 7th street is well-known with its entertainment activities, which makes it popular among the young generation. Near to the project site is the National Library of Turkey, which is significant with its database, special archives and collections, and documents.
